As energy efficiency and home comfort continue to be top priorities for homeowners in Massachusetts, we’ve seen a huge surge in interest around heat pumps and heat pump water heaters—and with good reason.
With federal tax credits and state rebates making it more affordable than ever to upgrade your home comfort system, many Pro Comfort Control customers are asking the same question lately:
“Are the heat pump tax credits going away?”
Here’s what you need to know.
The Federal Tax Credit is Expiring Soon
If you’ve been considering a heat pump or heat pump water heater for your home, now is the time to act. The 25C Energy Efficiency Home Improvement Tax Credit, which currently provides up to $2,000 in federal tax credits for qualifying heat pump systems, is set to expire at the end of 2025.
This means:
You must have your new qualifying heat pump or heat pump water heater installed before December 31, 2025 to claim the credit.
After 2025, there’s no guarantee the tax credit will be renewed or extended in its current form.
Pro Tip: This tax credit can be claimed annually and is separate from any state rebates or incentives available through Mass Save®.
The Mass Save® Program is NOT Going Away
We’re also hearing concern that the Mass Save® heat pump rebate program is ending.
Good news: It’s not!
The Mass Save® rebates, including up to $10,000 for qualifying heat pump installations, are staying in place. However, starting in 2026, these rebates are expected to begin gradually decreasing.
So while the program isn’t disappearing, the best savings are happening right now.
Stack Your Savings While You Still Can
By acting before the end of 2025, you can:
Claim up to $2,000 in federal tax credits
Receive up to $10,000 in Mass Save® rebates
Lower your monthly energy bills with a high-efficiency system
Improve your home comfort all year long
With rebates and tax incentives at peak levels—and potential declines in the near future—waiting could cost you.
