From Broken Furnace to Fully Green: One Framingham Homeowner’s Heat Pump Story

Table of Contents

When the heat goes out in the middle of a Massachusetts winter, panic sets in fast. That’s exactly where Jeff found himself last November, when one of his two heating systems broke down at his Framingham home. What followed was a two-week turnaround that left him with a brand-new whole-home heat pump system, a $10,000 state rebate, and a house that stays warmer than it ever did on gas.

The Problem

Jeff’s home runs two separate heating systems, one for each floor. When the system on one floor failed, he started reaching out for quotes and answers. He’d been researching heat pumps for nearly a year at that point, but getting clear information proved harder than expected.

“I tried to get quotes from various people and got nowhere on how heat pumps will work,” Jeff recalled. That changed when he reached out to Mitsubishi’s online support, and they connected him with Ryan from Pro Comfort Control.

The Solution

Ryan came out to Jeff’s home, walked him through how the system would work with his existing ductwork, explained the sizing, and covered financing options from the start. No confusion, no runaround.

“He came over and told me the whole deal, including financing and how the engineering of the system would work,” Jeff said. “It was sized right, and I got a really good feel that it was right.”

From there, Pro Comfort Control’s office assisted Jeff with the financing process for a $25,000 Mass Heat Loan. Jeff also received a $10,000 rebate from the state, bringing the total out-of-pocket cost down significantly for a complete system replacement. The installation was done in two days.

The Impact

The new Mitsubishi Hyperheat ducted system has made a noticeable difference throughout Jeff’s home, especially in the areas that used to struggle with even heat distribution.

“The bedroom’s at the far end of the house from where the old furnace was, and it used to get a bit cold,” Jeff said. “Now this system heats it better than it used to with gas.”

Beyond the comfort upgrade, Jeff now has full remote control over his system. He can adjust fan speed, set schedules, and change the temperature from anywhere. For someone who has managed rental real estate for 40 years and knows firsthand how critical heat reliability is, that kind of control matters.

Jeff also came into this with real-world experience with Mitsubishi Hyperheats, having installed them in a three-family property he renovated in Brookline. Those units are now in their third year of operation. So when it came to addressing the common concern that heat pumps don’t perform well in extreme cold, he was direct.

“There’s a lot of misinformation out there about heat pumps not working below 20 degrees. It’s all nonsense. These go down to minus 10.”

Going Fully Green in Framingham

With solar panels already on his roof, adding a heat pump system was the final step for Jeff in going completely off gas. For Framingham homeowners, that combination makes a lot of sense. The region’s winters are demanding, and energy costs in Massachusetts have climbed steadily. Getting ahead of that with high-efficiency equipment and taking advantage of available rebates is a practical move.

“Financially, I think it’s a really great thing,” Jeff said. “I got a totally new system at fairly low cost.”
